The Newlyn Fish Industry Forum was created to deliver a regeneration strategy for Newlyn, acceptable to the local community, which currently depends uniquely on the fishing industry for its economic survival. The Forum is an inclusive body, bringing together for the first time, all sectors of the industry and including harbour commissioners, community groups, local artists and the public sector. It is therefore a solid private/public partnership united in a common determination to achieve a sustainable regeneration of Newlyn. The Forum recognizes the present vulnerability and deprivation of the community, which has no economic hinterland beyond the fishing industry. It recognizes equally the strategic significance of Newlyn Harbour and the annual value of wet fish landings, the virtual total of which is sold away from Newlyn with no added value beyond primary processing. The Forum is determined to facilitate a considerable increase in added value so that more wealth can be retained within the community to generate more local employment. The overall policy therefore calls for a significant broadening of the local economic base, which for the first time will also bring a direct engagement with tourism where economic opportunities also exist thereby further enhancing the sustainability of the community. The Forum also directly addresses crucial issues of social inclusion in the nature of training and education, affordable housing, engagement with local schools, the creation of opportunities for young entrants to the fishing industry and encouragement for new artistic talent in a community conscious of its cultural heritage. The Forum intends to build greater awareness, self-confidence and pride in the local community in a genuinely sustainable manner and based on a broader economic framework
