The Newlyn Fish Industry Forum

The fishing industry in Newlyn is vital to the long term economic and social viability of the area. Newlyn holds the status as the most valuable individual fishing port in England and Wales, but the future of Newlyn depends on measures to regenerate the port, the industry and the local community.

The Mission for the Newlyn Regeneration Strategy is:

The creation of a modern fishing port with the facilities to support a thriving, sustainable fishing industry for the 21st century, the provision of new opportunities for economic diversity that reflect the rich economic, cultural and community identity of the area, and action across the whole community to ensure its vitality for the future

To enact this strategy a number of discreet but interlinked projects have been identified. These 'projects' aim to achieve a more sustainable future for the fishing industry and the community of Newlyn. The proposal projects are as follows and the purpose of the current Technical Investigations is to establish the scope and scale of development that could be pursued.

The New North Pier Breakwater to increase the size of the harbour basin by 100% so that space can be made for diversification into leisure pursuits

Existing North Pier Modifications to allow working on both sides of the pier.

New South Breakwater will offer protection to the expanded harbour from waves to the south.

Land Reclamation will provide the space required for an improved fish market, industrial units and infrastructure developments as well as a Heritage Centre.

The New Fish Market constructed on reclaimed land will incorporate office and training space for the lifeboat, HM Coastguard, Harbour Master and fishing industry.

Engineering Workspace. Provision of buildings to house light engineering works to support the fishing industry
Fuel Bunker and Distribution System.

Marine Pontoons. The relocation of the commercial activities to the new expanse of the harbour will free considerable space within the existing harbour basin for leisure craft with the addition of marine pontoons.

Retail Outlets and Market. The existing fish market and surrounding area is proposed as the location of a pedestrian retail area.

Sandy Cove. The area of land in the Newlyn Pier and Harbour Commissioners ownership is intended for use as a Boat Maintenance Facility and additional Commercial Units. It adjoins land in the ownership of MDL Developments Ltd.

Park and Ride, Cycle Route, Highway and Parking Improvements.
