Sandy Cove

Sandy Cove is being cleaned up with rubbish being removed. The accumulated stone against the south jetty is being redistributed by contractors employed by the Harbour Master.
Cornwall County Council have carried out a survey on the Japanese Knotweed in Sandy Cove and are now preparing a report.

Slipway

Slipway – It has been agreed with the Newlyn Pier and Harbour Commissioners that the existing slipway will be upgraded to provide a serviceable slip for the fishing fleet during the period of regeneration. In practical terms this means that there will be no alterations in terms of size or visual impact to the existing slipway: it will just be the capability which is upgraded..

Marina

The provision of a sixty berth marina is being costed and considered. This will form Phase 1 of the Option 4A strategy. A full hydrographical survey has been carried out and the indications are that there are no technical problems. The location of the marina will be to the right of the Mary Williams Pier looking seaward. It is anticipated that this area will be dredged to a depth of 3 metres. The existing lifeboat will, of course, remain in its present position until the final scheme is complete.

Shore side landing derricks

The provision of this facility is being actively investigated to enable and early completion date. The derricks cranes are primarily to assist the smaller craft using the harbour to land their catch in a safe controlled manner.

Existing Fish Market

This will be upgraded to enable Newlyn to maintain the high quality of its fish during the Regeneration Phase. All new items of equipment will be capable of being transferred to the new Fish Market in order to ensure optimum use of funding. Externally no changes are planed for the existing market. .

Sea Food Park

In excess of 90% of the fish landed in Newlyn in exported to Europe without any, or at best minimal, forms of processing. In order to fully capitalise output a “value-added” process needs to be implemented. This will take the form of a Sea Food Park, ideally situated in Newlyn. The Sea Food Park would bring the benefits of greater value for the product and additional employment whilst safeguarding seagoing jobs within the fishing industry. Preliminary meetings have taken place with the merchants and their conclusions are being analysed. As soon as a definite course of action emerges I will display the plans at the office in Newlyn and will include details in the next Newsletter in December.

Fish Festival

Penwith District Council and the Harbour Commissioners have ensured that the streets and harbour are looked their best during and after the Fish Festival. If you see any area that needs a little tender loving care let me know and I will contact the appropriate officer at Penwith Council. I would like to thank all the volunteers who assisted with the Fish Festival makin it a splendid day for all.

Trinity Project

Also included in this edition is an update of the existing Trinity Project. This project is sure to have a beneficial impact on all aspects of life in Newlyn. See the main feature of contacts if you need more informations.

Newlyn Art Gallery

Liz Knowles of Newlyn Art Gallery has provided an outline of the development within the Gallery which forms an important aspect of the regeneration strategy. Again if you require more information contact Liz at the Gallery.

The Phase Electricity Supply – North Jettty

This will provide additional safety lighting along the jetty and every care will be taken to avoid light pollution. Additionally, this supply will allow the fishing vessels to run a shore supply to maintain the quality of the fish in the fish rooms without running generators and thus reducing noise output.
As a bonus, the new supply will be available to the Newlyn Lights Group.
