An innovative project, EverybodyOnline, is launching in Newlyn to help local people find out how technology can help them keep in touch, improve their lives and also improve their chances of employability. Recent figures show that one third of adults in the UK have never used the Internet and yet 90% of new jobs rely on some form of Information Communication Technology (ICT) skills. Genealogy (or tracing your ancestry) is one of the fastest growing hobbies ever. But how do you start a hobby like Genealogy this if you don’t know a ‘blog’ from a ‘browser’? Gary Palmer, the newly appointed EverybodyOnline Project Officer for Newlyn, will be permanently based in the locality and working with the local community to ensure everyone in the area gets access to technology, the skills to use it and the opportunities it can bring. EverybodyOnline will work across Newlyn, Mousehole and Paul. They have partnered with several local organisations such as the Trinity Project, Penwith District Council, Learning and Skills Council, Act Now Broadband as well as BT to make sure that there is a comprehensive and tailored approach to digital skills development in the area. The EverybodyOnline project is an initiative run by the national charity Citizens Online and has been supported by BT since its inception. The project is unique in its approach, rather than simply bringing in technology and walking away, Gary will be working with the community to remove the issues that prevent access.
