Fundraising continues strongly in aid of the Newlyn Memorial to Fishermen Lost at Sea. Hon treasurer of the local committee, Shirley Stevenson, of Newlyn, said that the total now stood at over £13,000, towards the target of £50,000.

With friends she is organising a Boxing Day disco at The Lugger, Penzance promenade, from 8pm until late, with tickets £6 including pasty supper in aid of the fund. Mrs Stevenson is on 01736 363997.

Fishing families and organisations, local councils and individuals and beyond the Tamar have sent donations to the memorial fund, to Mrs Stevenson c/o Newlyn Mission.

It is proposed to commission a life-size bronze statue of a fisherman. This will be installed at the entrance to the village.
